The segmental arteries supply largely to the dorsal root ganglia of the spinal cord. These are concerned with the processing of sensory information, which enters the spinal cord through the dorsal roots. Along the dorsal root are the cells of the dorsal root ganglia, which are critical in the transmission of pain messages from the cord to the brain. The impulse travels through the dorsal root of the spinal nerve from where it passes through the white matter and into the grey matter.
