anasarca noun[ U ] medical specializeduk /ˌæn.əˈsɑː.kə/ us /ˌæn.əˈsɑːr.kə/ swelling that is caused by serum(= the thin, yellowish liquid part of blood) collecting in body tissues: On physical examination, the patient is noted to have anasarca. In severe cases, anasarca develops, increasing body weight up to 50%. The foetus had a very low heart rate and severe anasarca. In a patient with anasarca, intravenous diuresis is often needed because absorption of diuretics may be impaired. Oedema or anasarca is the most outward manifestation of the increased total body water in the extravascular space.
