amoebiasis noun[ U ] medical UKspecialized(USamebiasis)uk /ˌæm.ɪˈbaɪ.ə.sɪs/ us /ˌæm.əˈbaɪ.ə.sɪs/ an infection, usually of the intestine, caused by an amoeba(= a very small, simple organism): Amoebiasis is a parasitic infection that occurs in the intestines. About 10% of patients who contract amoebiasis display no symptoms of this type of intestinal infection at all. In developed countries, amoebiasis primarily affects travellers to and migrants from E. histolytica endemic regions. The diagnostic challenge is to distinguish amoebiasis from dysentery that is caused by bacteria. It has been estimated that E. histolytica causes between 34 million and 50 million cases of invasive amoebiasis each year.
