Amenorrhea can be caused when hormone levels are off balance. The most common cause of primary amenorrhea, failure to begin menstruating, is late puberty. In secondary amenorrhea, menstrual periods must be absent for three consecutive months. In most instances, symptoms and conditions related to amenorrhea are reversible and treatable. Various rates of amenorrhea were found in girls and women competing in gymnastics, soccer, swimming, cycling, triathlon, and boxing.
