The bulk of animal phyla have a true coelom. The abdominal part of the celom is the peritoneal cavity. This gonadal cord was located in the coelom region, above the intestine and below the dorsal musculature. Many of the worms found free in the coelom were covered by a thick layer of fibrotic tissue. As the lungs grow, they project into that part of the celom which will ultimately form the pleural cavities.
