Africander noun[ C or U ] (South African EnglishAfrikanderpluralAfrikander or Afrikanders)uk /ˌæf.rɪˈkæn.dər/ us /ˌæf.rɪˈkɑːn.dɚ/pluralAfricander or Africanders(alsoAfrikanerpluralAfrikaner or Afrikaners) a type of red cow with long horns and a hump (= large, round raised part) on its neck, originally bred in South Africa, and kept mainly for its meat or for pulling vehicles: The Sussex breed can pass its calm temperament to its offspring when crossed with the more excitable Africander and Brahman. The breed provided milk as well as beef and was a good match for the local Africanders. Africander cattle (also known as Afrikaner), were originally bred from the Khoi-Khoi cattle of the Cape of Good Hope. The Sussex thrives in cooler areas with a higher rainfall, where the Brahman and Africander are not successful. The Sussex has twice as many sweat glands as other European breeds (in this respect it is on a par with the Africander). These days, the South Devon cow makes a good cross with the Africander, and also with Brahman cows.
