This type of bone begins its growth as a finely cancellous tissue. Cortical bone is dense, while cancellous bone is loose (spongy). In younger individuals, the vertebral cancellous network is dense and well connected. The anterior and posterior ends of the centrum consist of highly cancellous bone.
