submunition noun[ Cusually plural ] (also mainly UKsub-munition)uk /ˌsʌb.mjuˈnɪʃ.ən/ us /ˌsʌb.mjuˈnɪʃ.ən/ one of several smaller weapons that are part of a large warhead(= a bomb or missile) and that are released before it reaches its target: Most submunitions are intended to explode on impact. They are carried in a large canister that breaks open in mid-air, dispersing the sub-munitions over a large area. The doctor extracted a submunition fragment from the victim's head. Cluster munitions are bombs that contain dozens or hundreds of smaller submunitions. These unexploded submunitions often explode when handled or disturbed. It has been estimated that approximately four million cluster submunitions were fired.
