stirabout noun[ U ] Irish Englishuk /ˈstɜː.rə.baʊt/ us /ˈstɝː.ə.baʊt/ a type of porridge(= a thick, soft food) made from oatmeal(= rough flour made from oats) or other grains, boiled in milk or water and eaten hot for breakfast: Stirabout was always a popular food in Ireland. Poor people made their stirabout with buttermilk or water. My brother and I were told not to tell people that we were given stirabout to eat as it was a sign of real poverty. Stirabout is considered wholesome food, but they have not been able to get it.
