SpAd noun[ C ] UK(alsospad)uk /spæd/ us /spæd/ short for special adviser: a person who works for a politician and whose job is to give that politician advice: SpAds may not formally represent the Government or their Minister. Spads can give political advice and help draft political speeches. The former chancellor resigned because he did not want to have his SpAds replaced with ones chosen by the prime minister. Spads provide an extra pair of hands when there is pressure on ministerial time. Special advisers (spads) are popularly seen as malign figures.
