Shar-Pei noun[ C ] (alsoShar Pei)uk /ˌʃɑːˈpeɪ/ us /ʃɑːrˈpeɪ/(also Chinese Shar-Pei) a medium-sized, strong-looking type of dog with loose skin, especially on its head and shoulders, and a square-shaped face. It has short, rough hair and a blue-black tongue: A Shar-Pei can be aloof, but once it gets to know its owner, it will be a very loyal pet. It was their wrinkles that made Chinese Shar-Peis one of the most distinctive and sought after breeds in the world. Dogs that have been bred to be wrinkly, such as Shar-Peis, bulldogs, or basset hounds, are prone to skin problems. Breeds with pronounced skin folds (e.g. English bulldog, Shar Pei) may be predisposed to infection.
