Schwann cell noun[ C ] anatomy specializeduk /ˈʃwɒn ˌsel/ us /ˈʃwɑːn ˌsel/ any of the cells that surround a nerve fibre in several layers, forming the myelin sheath that protects it: Schwann cells have important roles in the development, function, and regeneration of peripheral nerves. The Schwann cell spirals around, enclosing the axon in many layers of its plasma membrane. This may prove to be important in understanding the remarkable plasticity of Schwann cells, both in development and after nerve injury. It is a type of benign brain tumour that begins in the Schwann cells. The characteristic interaction of Schwann cells with axons is disrupted in this type of tumour of the peripheral nervous system.
