sarcomere noun[ C ] anatomy specializeduk /ˈsɑː.kəʊ.mɪər/ us /ˈsɑːr.koʊ.mɪr/ any of the smaller parts that form a myofibril(= a thread-like structure inside a muscle cell that makes the muscle move): Each fibre contains several bundles of myofibrils, with filaments arranged longitudinally in repeating units known as sarcomeres. Sustained sarcomere contraction results in increased metabolism and generates a localized energy crisis. During contraction, the myosin grabs onto the actin and pulls the filaments past it, shortening the sarcomere. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a heterogeneous condition affecting the sarcomere. Muscle tension and median sarcomere length were displayed on screen during the experiments.
