premaxilla noun[ C ] anatomy specializeduk /ˌpriː.mækˈsɪl.ə/ us /ˌpriː.mækˈsɪl.ə/pluralpremaxillaeuk /ˌpriː.mækˈsɪl.iː/ us /ˌpriː.mækˈsɪl.iː/ either of two bones in the upper jaw, in front of and between the maxillae(= upper jaw bones that support the upper teeth). In adult humans, the maxilla and premaxilla join to form one bone: Despite soft tissue repair around the cleft lip and palate, the bony segments of the maxilla and premaxilla are separate. Skull length is measured along the midline from the tips of the premaxillae to the back of the quadrates. They could gather food with the beak-like premaxillae and manipulate it with the large tongue. The small part in front of this suture constitutes the premaxilla, which in most vertebrates forms an independent bone. Due to breakage, the shape of the dorsal edge of the premaxilla is not well preserved.
