plasmin noun[ U ] anatomy specializeduk /ˈplæz.mɪn/ us /ˈplæz.mɪn/ an enzyme(= a chemical produced by living cells) in the blood that can dissolve blood clots(= almost solid pieces of blood): This decreases the ability to form plasmin and clear clots. The excessive clotting also activates plasminogen and increases plasmin levels. The plasmin generated will break down fibrin and fibrinogen to protein fragments. Cardiac plasmin activity is increased following myocardial ischaemia. Staphylokinase converts inactive plasminogen to plasmin, which in turn breaks down collagen.
