osteocyte noun[ C ] anatomy specializeduk /ˈɒs.ti.əʊ.saɪt/ us /ˈɑː.sti.oʊ.saɪt/ a bone cell that is surrounded by a layer of hard bone tissue : Osteocyte death is a major contributor to the decline of bone strength with age. Once captured in the hard bone matrix, the original bone-forming cells are now called osteocytes. Lacunae are small cavities in bone that contain osteocytes. These cells are now called osteocytes and they continue living and maintaining existing bone matrix.
