neural arch noun[ C ] anatomy specializeduk /ˌnjʊə.rəl ˈɑːtʃ/ us /ˌnʊr.əl ˈɑːrtʃ/ a curved structure made of bone or cartilage on the back part of a vertebra(= one of the small bones in the spine) that forms a passage for the spinal cord(= set of nerves in the spine) to pass through: They complete the neural arch by fusing together, and enclose the vertebral canal, which serves for the protection of the spinal cord. The vertebral or neural arch is formed by the two pedicles, two laminae, and spinous process. Various factors are thought to be responsible for the unfused neural arches and associated spinal cord defects. Ossification of the mandible, vertebral bodies, and neural arches occurs at around nine weeks' gestation. In about 1% of cases, these tumours become symptomatic, causing neural arch expansion.
