henbane noun[ U ] uk /ˈhen.beɪn/ us /ˈhen.beɪn/ a poisonous plant in the nightshade family, with a strong, unpleasant smell, sticky leaves, and yellowish-white flowers, used as a herb to treat medical conditions: The nightshade family includes such plants as the deadly nightshade, henbane, and tobacco, as well as the potato, aubergine, and tomato. The black or common henbane grows on waste land by roadsides. Although a powerful poison if taken in large quantities, henbane is a medicinal plant, much used as a tranquilizer and to reduce pain. In its action on the brain, henbane is very similar to opium. Henbane originates from the Mediterranean, where its deadly properties have been known since ancient times.
