basilar membrane noun[ C or U ] anatomy specializeduk /ˌbæs.ɪ.lə ˈmem.breɪn/ us /ˌbæz.ə.lɚ ˈmem.breɪn/ a thin layer inside the cochlea(= a twisted tube inside the ear) that supports the organ of Corti and sends signals to the brain: Sound moves along the basilar membrane as a series of waves. The most important property of the basilar membrane is its ability to separate various frequencies. Reduced responsiveness of very young infants may be due to the greater stiffness of the basilar membrane. An array of proteins work together to convert the pressure wave sensed by the basilar membrane into an electrical signal propagated by the auditory nerve.
