Basenji noun[ C ] uk /bəˈsen.dʒi/ us /bəˈsen.dʒi/ a type of medium-sized dog that does not bark, developed in Central Africa for hunting : The Basenji, an African wolf dog, is the only dog that cannot bark. A Basenji has a short, pale-brown and white coat, which it keeps meticulously clean. Basenjis are very vocal but, unlike most dogs, Basenjis don't bark. Something moved, then out of the hedge tumbled a bright red Basenji puppy. The Dog Genome Project is trying to isolate the various genes for breed-specific behaviours, including the Basenji's genetic reluctance to bark. The Basenji is sometimes described as the barkless dog, although it does have a reasonably extensive vocal range.
